Turner Industries Fund

PURPOSE Since it was founded nearly 50 years ago, Turner Industries has grown to be one of the nation’s leading heavy industrial contractors. Founder Bert S. Turner (now deceased) and his wife, Sue, and their children have taken an interest from the very beginning in steadily investing charitable dollars back into the communities in which the company works. As the company has grown in size and number of locations across the country, so have the number of recipients the company has been able to assist. Turner Industries has benefitted a wide variety of causes with emphasis on education, health, the arts and community development receiving funding over the years.

The Turner Industries Fund at the Baton Rouge Area Foundation invites you to apply for grant funding for your organization through this process. The Fund committee meets on a semi-annual basis to review grant requests and will look forward to reviewing your submission.

ELIGIBILITY The Fund will support nonprofit organizations in the greater communities of Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and New Orleans, Louisiana; Port Arthur, Houston, Corpus Christi and Paris, Texas; and Decatur, Alabama. The organization must have a non-discriminatory policy. It must demonstrate that it manages its business wisely and that an appropriate percentage of the grant will go to programs rather that administration.

Organizations eligible for funding should have values consistent with those of Turner Industries:

  • A top priority of everyone is to honor commitments, both personally and professionally.
  • The workplace atmosphere is one of openness and fairness where everyone communicates directly and honestly, and is governed by the same rules.
  • A goal of everyone is to grow, personally and professionally, and to contribute to the achievement of the organization.
  • The importance of innovation is recognized and peak performers are rewarded.
  • The value of excellence in produce quality, customer service and financial performance is stressed.

GRANT APPLICATION DETAILS

Proposal Summary: Every application must include a summary which provides the following information:

  • Project name
  • Organization’s address
  • Organization’s phone number
  • Organization’s fax number
  • Chief executive officer/senior official
  • Senior official’s email address
  • Board approved mission statement
  • Date mission statement approved by the board
  • Date organization incorporated as a 501(c)(3)
  • Web page/social media
  • Description of the project (no more than 3 sentences)
  • Compelling reason for the project
  • Amount requested
  • Program or project director’s name
  • Project director’s phone number
  • Project director’s email address
  • Target population
  • Project area of interest
  • Geographic region
  • Number of Turner Industries employees volunteer with the organization, if applicable
  • Amount received from the United Way, if applicable
  • Project start date
  • Project end date

Narrative Section: The application should be no longer than one typed page and should include the following information:

  • A brief history of the organization with an overview of current programs and activities
  • A brief description of the challenge to be addressed by the project
  • A detailed description of the project, including strategies, measurable objectives and a timetable. Note if the project is a replication of a successful evidenced-based model.
  • A plan for continuing the project once the Foundation’s funding ends
  • A plan for evaluating the project.

  1. Narrative
  2. The names and qualifications of the persons responsible for carrying out the program.
  3. A project budget and budget narrative.
  4. A list of the organization’s board members.
  5. Financial statements, including the organization’s operation budget, balance sheet and statements of support, revenue and expenses for the last completed and current fiscal year.
  6. A sign memorandum of understanding with the fiscal agent, if applicable.
  7. A statement from the organization’s board of directors authorizing the request and agreeing to implement the project if funded.
  8. A copy of the IRS letter of determination stating that the organization is tax-exempt, or a copy of the organization’s fiscal agent’s letter of determination along with a letter from the organization stating its willingness to serve as fiscal agent.
  9. A copy of the organizations non-discrimination policy.
