ISSUE
Animal welfare advocates approached the Foundation with information about the high kill rate at the Baton Rouge Animal Shelter.
Response
With these advocates, the Foundation began a No Kill effort in 2009. Our goal was to eliminate unnecessary euthanasia of companion animals in East Baton Rouge.
Result
The Companion Animal Alliance, a nonprofit, was created in 2010 and took over the EBR Animal Shelter in 2011. CAA's strategy is to boost the save rate of abandoned and lost animals by increasing adoptions while reducing the pet population through spaying and neutering. Other nonprofits have joined CAA to help save thousands of dogs and cats. By December 2011, the number of shelter animals saved had grown to more than 70% from about 20% before CAA had taken over operations. For more about CAA, visist CAABR.org.
