The Water Institute of the Gulf

ISSUE

Vast areas of Louisiana and Gulf Coast deltas are expected to vanish with rising seas and sinking wetlands. By the end of the century, seas alone are predicted to rise at least three feet, erasing tens of billions in coastal assets, roads and interstates among them. Wherever there are deltas around the world, coastal lands will drown, potentially displacing hundreds of millions of people.

Response

The Foundation, working with state and federal leaders, set about creating The Water Institute of the Gulf. The purpose is to assemble top scientists across many fields to provide answers to land loss. The Institute could become a worldwide resource.

Result

The Institute launched in December 2011 as a stand-alone nonprofit with a board led by Kevin P. Reilly Jr. of Lamar Corp. An interim CEO has begun to assemble people needed to begin the work.
